The National Registry recently hosted the first two Item Writing Committees of 2008. Both committees prepared additional EMT-Basic questions for future item banks.
Item writing committees typically consist of representatives from the National Association of State EMS Directors, National Council of State EMS Training Coordinators, and Educators
representing different geographical areas of the United States, a physician and National Registry Directors/Staff.
The members prepare questions in advance of the meeting covering all tasks identified in the NREMT Practice Analysis and based on the National Standard Curriculum for the level in which they are writing.
The committee then assembles to review the questions as a team for accuracy and revision, if needed. On average, each committee spends 160 man-hours reviewing questions prepared by members and forwards
an additional 200+ items to be evaluated through the standard setting process.
The National Registry will be hosting seven more committees throughout the year, who will focus on preparing items for the Emergency Medical Responder, Paramedic and Advanced EMT certification levels.
