National certification attests to the public, employers and colleagues your continued dedication to providing competent care and your commitment to the EMS profession. By
maintaining your national registration, you demonstrate that you meet national EMS standards for continuing education. National Certification is the most recognized EMS credential and can be a
valuable tool in future career advancement and reciprocity.
Re-registration requirements
Committed to continued competency, the NREMT has a re-registration process which must be accomplished every two years.
Re-registration can be completed in two ways: 1) Examination or 2) Traditional Refresher course and continuing education. Click here
to compare the options.
All re-registration candidates must also have current CPR and/or AL credentials and have their skill competency validated by either their supervisor or training officer.
For specific re-registration content and hour requirements by certification level, select the level from the column (on the left).
Re-registration Dates
Initial expiration dates are established in reference to the date of initial registration. Individuals initially registered during the first six months of the year will revert to the beginning
of that year for an anniversary date. Those initially registered during the last six months of the year will begin their biennium the first day of the following year.
For First Responders, all subsequent re-registration periods will be for the full two-year period running from October 1 through September 30. For EMT-Basic, Intermediate/85, Intermediate/99 and
Paramedic all subsequent re-registration periods will be for the full two-year period running from April 1 through March 31.
Re-instatement policy
Re-instatement policy was implemented to help those individuals who completed all re-registration requirements within the registration cycle but failed to mail the re-registration materials to the
NREMT by the March 31 deadline. The re-instatement policy allows registrants to mail completed re-registration materials to the NREMT between April 1 and April 30 provided all re-registration
requirements were met on or before the March 31 deadline. In addition to the standard re-registration fee, registrants using the re-instatement policy must submit a re-instatement fee of $50.00.
Active affiliation/use of certification skills
The NREMT requires all individuals applying for EMT-Basic re-registration to be actively affiliated with an ambulance/rescue organization or a patient healthcare facility.
The NREMT requires all EMT-Intermediates (85 and 99) and Paramedics applying for re-registration to be actively affiliated with an organization that provides advanced life support services. The
registrant must be performing the patient care skills of an Intermediate or Paramedic within the EMS organization.
Inactive Status
An inactive status is designated for Nationally Registered EMTs who are not actively engaged in ambulance/rescue service or health/patient care activity. Inactive status is designed for those
registrants who must be inactive for a period of time due to moving, illness, pursuit of education, family responsibilities, etc. Educators, administrators or regulators who are not actively
treating patients should consider this status.
Inactive status will be awarded only to those who have fulfilled refresher, CPR and continuing education requirements.
Inactive status only exempts the registrant from providing proof of affiliation and verification of skills competence.
Only registrants who can document a minimum of 6 months active affiliation with an EMS service, may request inactive status. A registrant may not request inactive status in his/her initial
registration if he/she has never been affiliated with an ambulance/rescue service or functioned in a patient health care setting.
Return to Active Status
An EMT-Basic registrant may request return to active status at anytime he/she gains active affiliation within the rescue, ambulance or patient healthcare setting.
An EMT-Intermediate (85 & 99) or an EMT-Paramedic may request return to active status at anytime he/she gains active affiliation with an ALS service.
A request to return to active status must be accompanied by a completed Inactive to Active Registration form which may be downloaded here
or obtained by calling the NREMT Re-registration Department.
Lapsed Certification
If your National EMS Certification lapsed within a two year period or you are currently state licensed as an EMS provider, you can obtain National Certification by completing a state approved
Refresher course and successfully completing the cognitive and psychomotor examinations. If your EMS certification expired more than two years ago, you must complete an entire state-approved
course and complete the cognitive and psychomotor examinations.
