The Emergency Medical Technician has earned recognition and status similar to
that of other allied health professions. This status is not automatically
bestowed. It evolves as EMTs deliver improved patient care because of their
training, retraining, commitment and often personal sacrifice.
A mechanism for attesting to the proficiency of ambulance personnel nationwide
is essential if quality control is to be maintained. Fully understanding its
role as a registration agency which issues certificates of competency, NREMT
provides a mechanism to assure the protection of the public by verifying
achievement of the minimal competencies of EMTs at the three nationally
recognized levels of pre-hospital care. The National Registry establishes and
implements uniform requirements for emergency medical technicians, their
training, examination, and continuing education.
The Registry is an independent, free-standing, non-governmental,
not-for-profit organization. Unlike a club, union, or association which is
made up of members, the Registry is comprised of qualified registrants who
must meet recertification requirements biennially to maintain their status.
An up-to-date directory of all registered Emergency Medical Technicians is
maintained by NREMT. Numerous inquiries from around the country relating to
the vocation of the EMT are processed through the Registry's headquarters. The
staff sits on major national EMS committees and plays an active part in the
ever-continuing process of improving standards of emergency medical services.
However, the greatest significance of the organization is in certifying that
the Nationally Registered EMT is capable of administering a level of patient
care that has been measured and documented.
The purpose of the Registry as recorded in its bylaws is:
To promote the improved delivery of Emergency Medical Services by:
assisting in the development and evaluation of educational programs to
train Emergency Medical Technicians.
establishing qualifications for eligibility to apply for registration.
preparing and conducting examinations designed to assure the competency of
Emergency Medical Technicians
establishing a system for biennial re-registration (every two years).
establishing procedures for revocation of certificates of registration for
cause.
maintaining a directory of Registered Emergency Medical Technicians.
To develop guidelines and programs to assist individuals who have
completed Emergency Medical Technician programs to raise their level of
competence to assure the provision of improved Emergency Medical Services
To do any and all things necessary or desirable for the attainment of the
stated purposes.
